Planning an Extension: Your Timeline from Start to Finish
Extending your home involves more than just construction—there’s a detailed process that starts with permissions and ends with a final sign-off.
Here’s a step-by-step look at a typical extension timeline:
Planning & Approvals
If required, planning permission is obtained. Building Control is notified, and plans are submitted for approval.
Pre-Start
Price agreed, contracts signed, and materials ordered.
Groundworks
Foundations, footings, and drainage installed. Building Control will typically inspect at this stage.
Superstructure
External walls, roof structure, roof coverings, windows and external doors fitted.
1st Fix
Internal walls built; electrical wiring, plumbing, and heating pipework installed.
Plastering
Insulation installed; plasterboards and wet plaster applied.
2nd Fix
Internal doors, fixtures and fittings installed; electrical, plumbing and heating systems are commissioned.
Final Inspection & Completion
Final Building Control inspection is carried out. Once approved, the completion certificate is issued, and the building is handed over.
