Shou Sugi Ban

If you’ve been looking into cladding options for an extension, you might have come across something called Shou Sugi Ban – or seen it written as Yakisugi. It’s a traditional Japanese technique that’s been making waves here in the UK, and for good reason. Not only does it look striking, but it also offers a bunch of practical benefits.
So what exactly is it – and why might you want to use it on your build?
First things first – what is Shou Sugi Ban?
Sounds a bit odd, right? But by carefully burning the wood’s surface, then brushing, cooling and oiling it, you actually make it more durable, weather-resistant, and pest-proof. It also gives the timber a rich, dark finish – anywhere from deep charcoal to a silvery black, depending on how it’s treated.
Traditionally, the technique was used on Japanese cedar to protect homes from the elements, without the need for paints or chemical treatments. These days, it's being adapted to a range of timbers, and used across all kinds of modern builds.

Why use it for cladding an extension?
- It looks great. The charred finish brings real character, whether you’re after a bold, contemporary look or something that blends well with older materials. It works beautifully against brick, render, or even more traditional stone.
- It’s low maintenance. Once installed and properly treated, Shou Sugi Ban doesn’t need painting or regular upkeep. It weathers well over time and holds its own in the UK climate.
- It lasts. Thanks to the charring process, the timber is resistant to rot, insects, and UV – so you’re getting beauty andlongevity.
- It’s sustainable. There are no harsh chemicals involved, and many UK suppliers are now offering responsibly sourced versions, making it a greener alternative to synthetic finishes.

Is it right for your project?
Shou Sugi Ban isn’t for everyone – it’s bold, a bit different, and might not be the right fit for very traditional or listed buildings. But if you’re after something that stands out (and stands up to the weather), it’s well worth considering.
